Well done to the 500 priests

Signatory: Fr Anthony Conlon,
former National Chaplain to the LMS
I have been away from my desk, but I want to record my gratitude and admiration for the preists who signed the letter to the Catholic Herald which was published online this week.  I append the letter and the list of signatories to the end of this post. Many of these priests are familiar to me through the work of the Latin Mass Society, because they say the Traditional Mass (they include the LMS' National Chaplain, Mgr Gordon Read); many others are new names. Let us pray for them all.

Cardinal Nichols has suggested that the priests' concerns would best have been communicated to the bishops privately, not through the press. I, respectfully, disagree. While I can see the argument about not doing the Church's dirty laundry in public, this letter is not an attack on anyone, just a statement of fidelity to the Church. For that is what fidelity to tradition in teaching and discipline is.

And this letter is not addressed to the bishops. No doubt the bishops will benefit from reading it, but the lay faithful and non-Catholics also need to read this letter, to gain a sense of what is at stake.

What worries me most about the forthcoming Synod is not a change in doctrine: that is impossible. It is not even a formal change in discipline: a change to the Code of Canon Law and the Catechism of the Catholic Church seems very unlikely, it would be complicated to do and would bring opposition to a head in a way the proponents of change would not want. What worries me is an extension of existing situation of de facto laxism in some places to the whole Church, with some kind of semi-official endorsment from the highest levels of the hierarchy. A situation in which the rules exist, but are ignored, and where adherence to the Church's rules is, illogically but insistently, regarded as disloyalty to the Church; where a submission to the Divine Law and a concern for the good of souls is, in defiance of all sanity, regarded as an arrogant rejection of God's mercy.

This is already happening, it has indeed been happening on one issue or another all over the Church for many years. If it starts happening universally, regardless of the attitude of the local bishop, fanned by the secular media and aided the civil authorities, the problems we have been having up to now will look like a picnic.

What I mean I have blogged about here. In a nutshell, priests who feel in conscience unable to give Holy Communion to public sinners would, where laxism has become an officially approved policy, be accused of everything up to and including homophobia, and with no support from the Church they will be hung out to dry. Don't tell me they won't lose their jobs, be drummed out of their religious communities, or end up in court: we are rapidly heading in that direction anyway, without the assistance of a Synod in Rome.

On this issue our priests are going to caught between the hammer and the anvil. We must accompany them, if necessary, into this valley of tears, on the Church's journey to the heavenly Jerusalem.

On why people in an objective state of sin cannot be given Holy Communion by a priests in good conscience, see here.

Sign the Filial Appeal on the Synod here.

Here is the letter to the Catholic Herald.

SIR – Following the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops in Rome in October 2014 much confusion has arisen concerning Catholic moral teaching. In this situation we wish, as Catholic priests, to re-state our unwavering fidelity to the traditional doctrines regarding marriage and the true meaning of human sexuality, founded on the Word of God and taught by the Church’s Magisterium for two millennia.

We commit ourselves anew to the task of presenting this teaching in all its fullness, while reaching out with the Lord’s compassion to those struggling to respond to the demands and challenges of the Gospel in an increasingly secular society. Furthermore we affirm the importance of upholding the Church’s traditional discipline regarding the reception of the sacraments, and that doctrine and practice remain firmly and inseparably in harmony.

We urge all those who will participate in the second Synod in October 2015 to make a clear and firm proclamation of the Church’s unchanging moral teaching, so that confusion may be removed, and faith confirmed.
Yours faithfully,

  1. It was a little time ago that Bishop Egan of Portsmouth stated that politicians who voted for abortion and "gay marriage" should be refused Communion. He was slapped down by a "Spokesman for the Bishops Conference".

Then when Cdl Nichols came back from the Synod he went to the Press to tell them that he voted against the Traditional line outcome because it wasn't sufficiently caring, or something like that. Now he is objecting to Priests writing to the Press

And then as you regularly comment elsewhere, Mgr Loftus is able to write in the Press every week and yet no one does anything to stop that.

And of course, the master of all, in going to the Press, Pope Francis himself. But then I suppose that what he says is so full of double talk that it could be said to be thinking out loud, rather than actually giving an opinion.

Very well done to these 491 priests. I know two of them. In fact many years ago, one of them was responsible for me attending a few Saturday morning sessions for those considering entering the Priesthood. At least I know that he wasn't there under false pretences.
I just wish that a few more that I know had signed up.
