Bishop McKenzie of Dunkeld (which includes Dundee) has ordered the Marian Franciscan Friars and Sisters, whose communities occupy different parts of the Lawside Convent complex in Dundee, to leave the diocese within six months.
Their finding a place to go will be a challenge. Please pray for them.

How petty but no doubt he has too many priests in his diocese
ReplyDeleteThere is an empty Benedictine convent at Oulton Abbey in Staffordshire with a beautiful Pugin chapel. It is cared for by Buckfast Abbey, Devon. Could they move there?
ReplyDeleteThis is very similar to the actions of the New Zealand Bishop ordering the Sons of the Holy Redeemer to leave his Diocese. These actions really demonstrate a problem with the dictatorial powers of Bishops, including the Pope and the need to update the Code of Canon Law.
ReplyDeleteOnce an Order is established or is invited into a Diocese Bishops should not have the power to order it to go unless they have a reason and removal is objectively justified and proportionate. There should be some ability to appeal an expulsion to an independent tribunal.
The more that Church officials act like dictators the more their role and powers will be justified. Yes the Catholic faith relies on communion with the Pope and Bishops but that does not mean that the Pope and Bishops need dictatorial powers
PS Last paragraph should read
ReplyDelete"The more that Church officials act like dictators the more their role and powers will be questioned"
