The Latin Mass Society is delighted to announce that booking is now open for this year’s Walking Pilgrimage to Walsingham.
We are very grateful to Bishop Peter Collins of East Anglia, who has, as in past years, given us permission to celebrate the Vetus Ordo (Traditional Mass) throughout the pilgrimage. As we have outgrown the Catholic churches we used in Ely and Swaffam in the past, last year we made the transition to Masses in our campsites in Ely and Stoke Ferry, before breakfast, celebrated outside using a specially designed covered Altar and sanctuary.
In the past, we had Mass on the Sunday of the Pilgrimage in the Roman Catholic Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, in Houghton St Giles, and those staying in the area that evening returned for a Mass on the Monday morning in the Slipper Chapel. The Shrine has not been able to accommodate either of these requests this year.
Accordingly, the pilgrimage will conclude, as usual, in the grounds of Walsingham Priory, which was destroyed in 1536, and where the Holy House was situated. The site of the Holy House has remained a place of Catholic devotion over the centuries, and we will have Mass near that spot on the final day of the pilgrimage this year.
We would like to record our thanks to the Walsingham Estate, and to Fr Billings of the Catholic Shrine, for making this alternative arrangement possible.
