St Philomena in New Brighton

They are getting ready for the Feast of St Philomena, 11th August, in the church - SS Peter & Paul and St Philomena - looked after by the Institute of Christ the King in New Brighton.

Ora pro nobis!

On the unequal battle between St Philomena and Mgr Basil Loftus, and a photo of an earlier version of her shrine in the church, see here.

  2. I was there and a beautiful Sung Service as always followed by a get-together where we all had the chance to talk about the FSSP being given the Church of St Mary's in Warrington.

Anyway going back to the picture the Priest wearing the magnificent Cope is Canon Tanner who is a newly ordained Priest of the Institute. If you look carefully at the picture of the Cope you will see the symbols of St Philomena namely an Anchor, a sword and a spear. The Main altar was decorated with a magnificent Altar frontal bearing the same embroidery as the Cope all the items, apparently, dating back the foundation of the Church in 1935.

I am not an embroiderer but I can appreciate skill and beauty when I see it. It is wonderful to see these old and beautiful vestments being used again for the purpose for which they were intended
